Transcendental Meditation:

Your Questions Answered

Our most frequently asked questions and answers about Transcendental Meditation®.

  • What happens during Transcendental Meditation?

Transcendental Meditation is a one to one guided practice that is ongoing and personalised to the individual. You will experience your mind becoming more calm and quiet, and your body becoming more deeply relaxed. Transcendental Meditation is easy and enjoyable.

  • How regularly should I practice Transcendental Meditation?

The benefits of Transcendental Meditation are cumulative. To ensure good progress we recommend you practise regularly, twice a day, for 15-20 minutes.

  • What if I don’t have the time for regular practice?

That’s what most people say at first. But, once implemented into your daily routine, it becomes effortless. Many of our students grow protective of their meditation time because of how vastly daily practice impacts their life. Your teacher will be happy to give you tips on how to find the time, often switching time spent scrolling on phones or unwinding before bed.

  • Can anyone learn Transcendental Meditation?

Transcendental Meditation is suitable for everyone, if you wish for more restorative sleep, a more balanced life free from addiction, more compassionate relationships, deeper job satisfaction, or a more balanced frame of mind.

  • Can I learn Transcendental Meditation from a book?

No. Everyone is different which is why a personal guided approach that centers around you is essential.

  • Do you need to feel relaxed at the start of practice?

No. It can be remarkably helpful to begin meditation when you feel mentally and physically agitated. The technique is designed to be soothing and help you reconnect with your mind, which can be done during periods of heightened stress, or as a developed habit when you already feel calm.

  • How long does Transcendental Meditation take to learn?

Our courses are conducted over a couple of hours on each of four consecutive days, with an optional (but recommended) six month follow up programme to ensure that you are gaining full benefit. At the end of this time you will be self sufficient in the practice. You are not joining a group or becoming part of an organisation, simply learning to care for your body and mind from your own home and in your own time.

Alternatively, following personal instruction, you will be given access to the TM app that allows you to guide yourself through lessons in your own time. This is supported by zoom sessions to ensure you are engaging comfortably with your practice and answer any questions you may have.

  • Will I be required to study?

Not at all. Many people believe that TM requires a certain level of mastery, but it requires little intellectual effort and relies solely on giving your mind the time and space to breathe. Everything you need to know will be explained in simple language during the course.

  • Will it interfere with my existing beliefs?

No. TM can be learned and practiced by people of all backgrounds and beliefs, and some say it even helps them find a deeper connection with their faith.

  • Will I be required to chant, or adopt unusual postures?

No. When you meditate you sit comfortably with your eyes closed, in silence; to the onlooker it will appear as though you are dozing. It is perfectly possible, for instance, to meditate on a train journey or on your lunch break at work.

  • Is Transcendental Meditation similar to hypnosis?

Transcendental Meditation is unique. Hypnosis involves suggestion. Transcendental Meditation is natural and involves no suggestion. All other forms of meditation or self development involve either concentration or contemplation. Transcendental Meditation is easy to learn, effortless to practice, and involves neither concentration nor contemplation.

  • I have a history of ill health. Can I meditate safely?

Yes, it is completely safe. Of course if you are taking medical treatment we recommend that you continue to take your doctor’s advice. Incidentally, a large and growing number of health professionals both practise transcendental meditation and recommend it to their patients. Incidentally, a large and growing number of health professionals both practise Transcendental Meditation and recommend it to their patients.

The health benefits are far reaching and have been rigorously examined in literally hundreds of prestigious medical publications. So much so that a delegation of British doctors has petitioned the department of health in Westminster to make the practice more widely available on the NHS.

  • Do I have to give up anything or change my diet?

No. There is absolutely no need to change your diet or way of life. All you need to do is practice Transcendental Meditation twice a day and carry on with your daily life. TM is a technique, not a way of life.
