Transcendental Meditation Mantras – What Are They and Where Do They Come From?

Mantras are a significant component of Transcendental Meditation and are used silently within the mind. But there’s a lot more to these mantras.

This article will explain what mantras are, how they work, and where they come from. It will give you a better understanding of Transcendental Meditation and enhance your practice.

What Are Transcendental Meditation Mantras?

A Transcendental Meditation mantra is a sound used to create a specific vibration. For example, words such as love, peace, and happiness all have a positive vibration as they are associated with positive things. In contrast, words such as hatred and violence bring a negative vibration. However, in TM we do not use a word or sound which has a meaning for us – if it had an intellectual meaning we would be stuck on the surface level of the mind.

TM uses sounds which are soothing and allow the mind to produce an altered state of consciousness where you can be free of all thoughts and emotions. The mantras used for TM also have a huge healing effect on the entire body and mind and act as a tool to reach a state of pure consciousness.

An important thing to know about TM mantras is that they are always experienced silently within the mind.

Why Aren’t Mantras Chanted?

Transcendental Meditation is about deep rest. So, if you were to chant out loud, your body would still be active, and your mind would be too focused on the chanting. TM is essentially and effortless process – the less we do the better it works!

You want to settle into silence during your practice. Plus, mantras are more powerful when they are thought instead of chanted.

How Do Transcendental Meditations Work?

The aim of TM is to settle your mind into silence, and a mantra helps achieve this. The founder of Transcendental Meditation, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, says that each individual is best suited for one particular mantra.

So learning a mantra from a book or making one up is not effective. We need to know the effects of different mantras in order to choose the right one for the individual. The long tradition of TM helps us to do this. The knowledge supporting this meditation is thousands of years old and has been handed down from teacher to student over many generations – it has stood the test of time; people wouldn’t still do it if it didn’t work…

How Do You Choose Your Mantra?

The list of mantras is almost endless, but a fully trained Transcendental Meditation teacher will pass on the correct mantra for you. Each teacher receives months of extensive training so they can correctly teach you TM.

Transcendental Meditation teachers will always follow these 4 aspects to ensure TM will work for you:

  1. Receive a correct mantra
  2. Know how to use the mantra correctly
  3. The ability to interpret experiences properly as a result of using the mantra
  4. Ongoing, lifetime support and guidance

Where Do Transcendental Meditations Come From?

TM mantras date back thousands of years to the ancient Vedic tradition of India. People have continuously used these ancient mantras for their balancing and soothing value as well as for their consciousness raising qualities.

The unified field, known as the silent source of all creation, the Self, and Consciousness, produces natural vibrations. The mantras in TM resonate with these vibrations and enable us to be more effective in our daily life and ultimately to experience higher states of consciousness.
